Let’s face it – everyone needs caring for and everyone has a particular way that works best. Be it parents or an elderly relative, it is crucial to support them emotionally during this the later stages in life – it is our turn to repay what they have done for us, by providing proper care in their old age. Here are just a few things to keep in mind when assisting the elderly with their daily living.

Maintain Dignity

Elderly people often go through pain, sadness, boredom, and loneliness. Their dignity is, at times, compromised due to personal needs like incontinence and lacking the ability to wash and take baths. Treat them with respect – don’t make them feel self-conscious. A good idea is to talk to them while you change clothing or give baths.

Regular Exercise

There are several exercises for older people, which can keep them relatively healthy and fit. So, start with exercises that are initially light and later they can take up more depending on their capability. If they are unable to move or are disabled, then you can look up free hand exercises. Here are some great tools to use for determining and implementing the right exercise program.

Check Medicines

Poor medication management is a common problem, and it could lead to elders having to live under supervision. Go over their medication carefully – the prescribed ones shouldn’t have any impactful side effects or interact with other medicines. The pharmacist issuing these medicines will be reputable, but make sure to ask questions anyway; sometimes they can repackage pills that shouldn’t be taken, by packaging it along with other medicines that they failed evaluate. And please ensure that medicines don’t get mixed up.

Assisted Living

At times, it isn’t possible to care for elders personally, which is why you should hire a professional caregiver. However, this option might not work out, because elders who have been independent throughout their life, don’t like to rely on a stranger. In that case you can consider an assisted living facility. They provide a welcoming, homey environment so the person feels more comfortable even if they have to depend on other people. The biggest advantage is they can interact with others of similar ages and form friendships – it makes the experience easier.

Communicate

Even though you might not be able to visit or talk to them on a daily basis, find time to speak over the phone or in person at least 3 to 4 times a week. These conversations act as excellent morale boosters, thus elders won’t feel so helpless and lonely. Be patient with them if they have suffered a stroke or illness that has affected their speech and ability to hear. Elderly care means lots of mental support – love, respect, and be there for them!
